Swedish rya carpet, circa 1970s.
Handwoven rya carpet in pure wool with a dense, long pile and a decorative abstract pattern in brown, pink, red, yellow, cream, black and green tones. The composition consists of organic elongated forms combined with smaller geometric motifs against a brown ground.
Origin: Sweden.
Material: Pure wool.
Dimensions: L. 160 cm incl. fringes, W. 100 cm.
Period: Circa 1970s.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor signs of wear.
Bio:
Rya is a traditional Nordic weaving technique in which long wool knots are tied onto a woven foundation, creating a dense and tactile surface. In Sweden, the technique was further developed throughout the 20th century and became prominent in textile art and interior design. During the 1960s and 70s, rya textiles were often produced in pure wool with abstract motifs, distinctive colour combinations and a strong emphasis on textile structure.
